The event will focus on exploring the Open SU's Trans Action Plan, highlighting how it sets out to improve trans inclusion across the OU. Core commitments of the plan include:

Improving the consistent recording and use of students’ names and pronouns.
Expanding staff training on trans inclusion and effective allyship.
Publishing clearer guidance on support routes and safety for trans students.
Equipping student leaders with resources to visibly champion trans inclusion.

Held as part of Pride Month, the session will encourage attendees to reflect on how they can support the plan’s implementation and reinforcing Open SU’s commitment to building a safer, more inclusive OU.

Investigating the experiences of LGBTQIA+ students at the Open University (08/06/2026, 11:00)

The experience of LGBTQIA+ students in higher education has attracted increased attention in recent years. However, very little is known about the experiences of undergraduate and taught postgraduate LGBTQIA+ students in the Open University, or in distance learning contexts more generally. This session will introduce an ongoing pan-university scholarship project at the OU, led by LGBTQIA+ scholars from all four faculties, and including two student interns. We present how our project has used qualitative methods and participatory approaches – with a strong students-as-partners ethos – to investigate and improve the experience of LGBTQIA+ students at the Open University, ensuring that they are supported, safe, included and have an equitable student experience.

This will be a hybrid session, with the face-to-face element kindly hosted by the Open University in Scotland, and with an opportunity to socialise in person afterwards for those in Edinburgh.

This joint event brings together the Proud staff network and the OU Pride student network to explore how Pride networks support belonging, visibility, and community. Through shared discussion, we will look at what motivates people to get involved, how LGBTQIA+ experiences can differ between staff and students, and how working together can strengthen impact. The session will also focus on identifying shared challenges and future topics to shape collaboration between our networks.

The OU in Scotland invites all OU in Scotland students to join us for a Big Blether via video call.

A good blether can help us through a tough time, give us the confidence to overcome a hurdle or just put a smile on our face at the end of a long day.

Our Big Blether events are fantastic opportunities to meet fellow students and have a chat. Join us for fun activities and uplifting conversations! All Scottish students are warmly welcomed.

Sessions will last 60 minutes. You can drop by any time between 18:30 and 19:30 and stay for as long as you can. We’ll be hosting breakout rooms throughout the event to give you a chance to chat with fellow students.

The sessions will be hosted on Adobe Connect – this is the platform that is used for most modules in the OU.

We host a Big Blether every month, and you’re welcome to join us whenever it suits you—whether that’s every time or just now and then!

The OU Pride Committee would like to welcome all OU students (LGBTQ+ and allies) to join us every Friday late evening for a couple hours of study in a supportive student environment via Microsoft Teams. Cameras and microphones are optional!

Each session will begin with a 10 minute welcome chat, followed by 50 minutes of silent independent study (mics muted). We will then have a 10 minute break, where attendees are free to put mics back on and chat to each other, before a second block of 50 minutes independent study.

This will be a regular event hosted on the second Saturday of every month from 11am - 1 pm.

Location: Waterstones Coffee Shop (First Floor), 24-26 High Street, Birmingham

Please also note our Face-to-face Guidance for Accessing Meetings, Events and Activities. It is recommended that:

Attendees are encouraged to take a lateral flow test before attending, and should only attend if the test is clearly negative.
Attendees should NOT attend if they feel unwell at all (even if not COVID related) to minimise the risk of spreading any illness.
Attendees are encouraged to act in accordance with the face-mask policy for the venue where the Meet-up is taking place, and at all times to respect others’ rights to wear a face-mask and maintain social distancing (where appropriate).

Disabled Student Group drop-in (11/06/2026, 18:30)

The Disabled Student Group Committtee are pleased to invite you to their monthly drop-in held on the second Thursday of every month.

It is an informal opportunity to chat with other students about anything and everything, and get help and support from the Committee via signposting on any disability-related issues that affect your studies.

Both cameras and microphones are entirely optional, and you can feel free to come along for as long as you'd like to be there.
