A word going off in the sunset, with 'start' written on it.

We're excited to announce that Open SU's Clubs are being relaunched as ‘Student-Led Groups’ (SLGs), and we're officially reopening applications for students who want to start a new group of their own.

Whether you're passionate about a hobby, interested in a topic, looking to connect with people who share your experiences, or simply want to create a space for students to come together, Student-Led Groups are for you.

Why the change?

Over the past year, we've been reviewing how we support student communities, and listening to feedback about what students need from Open SU.

As part of this work, we've introduced a new Student-Led Group model that gives groups clearer support, better visibility, and a stronger connection to the wider student community. We've also simplified how groups operate, making it easier for students to get involved and for volunteer leaders to focus on what matters most – creating welcoming, active communities.

Student-Led Groups will continue to be student-driven, but with more support from our EDI and Belonging Team, improved opportunities for promotion and access to funding through a straightforward grants process.

What is a Student-Led Group?

A Student-Led Group is a community created and run by Open University students, for Open University students.

Groups can be based around:

  • Shared interests and hobbies
  • Academic subjects
  • Culture, identity and lived experience
  • Wellbeing and peer support
  • Social activities and networking
  • Causes and campaigns
  • Anything else that helps students connect and belong

There is no limit on the number of student-led communities we can support, meaning there is more opportunity than ever for students to create spaces that reflect the diversity of the OU community.

Thinking of starting a new group?

We've heard from students over the years who wanted to start a community but weren't sure where to begin. We're pleased to say that applications to create new Student-Led Groups are now open.

If you have an idea and can find at least one other student to help lead the group with you, we'd love to hear from you.

As a Student-Led Group, you'll receive:

  • Support from our EDI and Belonging Team
  • Training for group leaders
  • Promotion through Open SU channels
  • Access to funding opportunities
  • Support with events and activities
  • Opportunities to connect with other group leaders

Building belonging, together

Student-Led Groups are at the heart of creating an inclusive, vibrant and connected student community. They help students make friends, share experiences, develop new skills and get more from their time at The Open University.

We're incredibly excited about the future of Student-Led Groups and the new communities that will emerge as a result. So, if there's a community you've always wanted to see, now's the perfect time to make it happen.

Interested in starting a Student-Led Group? Starting a Student-Led Group couldn't be easier, simply gather a like-minded friend or two and submit your SLG application using this form. If you’d like some support with an idea, just get in touch with the EDI and Belonging Team on oustudents-belonging@open.ac.uk to discuss your idea.

We can't wait to see what you create.
