It’s time to meet the second star speaker for our Student Summit… Sally Gunnell!
As the only woman to have held Commonwealth, European, World and Olympic track titles simultaneously – winning the Olympic Gold for 400m hurdles in 1992 – Sally will be joining us to share her unique perspective on perseverance, balance, and mindset with you.
Join to explore lessons learnt throughout her career in Elite sports and beyond, and you’ll have the chance to ask her your questions!
Before focusing on 400m hurdles, Sally’s athletics journey began at the Essex Ladies’ club as a pentathlete and long jumper, later moving to the 100m hurdles and winning Gold at the Edinburgh Commonwealth Games of 1986. Her speed endurance and mental toughness soon became apparent as she took Gold at the European Cup 400m flat race in 1989. Then, her first Gold in the 400m hurdles came in the 1990 Commonwealth Games, finding her perfect sport and going on to take home Silver in the 1991 World Championships, and Gold in the 1992 Olympics. She continued to make history, where despite having a heavy cold, Sally set a new World Record at the Stuttgart 1993 World Championships.
After an impressive career and a secure place in the history books, she's gone on to bring the trackside atmosphere to living rooms across the UK as part of the BBC sports team, as well as appearing in popular shows like A Question of Sport. Now, she uses her platform to champion health and wellbeing across the UK, and we’re excited to welcome her to speak to OU students everywhere for our Student Summit on 21 November!
Voting on our resolutions opens from 30 October to 13 November, so check your emails then for a link to cast your votes and secure your space at the Student Summit.
