Michael Oladele – Vice President Welfare
Can you give some information about your role?
My role is focused on representing students’ welfare interests, helping to make sure student wellbeing is heard at a senior level, and working with others to improve support, access and student experience across the OU community.
What made you want to be part of our Student Leadership Team?
I wanted to be part of the Student Leadership Team because I care deeply about student welfare, inclusion, and making sure students feel seen and supported. Many OU students are balancing study with work, family, health, finances and real-life pressures, and I wanted to use my own experience to help represent that reality. I also believe leadership is about service, listening, and helping create better outcomes for others.
What are you hoping to achieve in the 2026–2028 term?
During the 2026–2028 term, I want to help strengthen the way students are supported, particularly around wellbeing, belonging, accessibility, and communication. I want students to feel that support is easier to find, that their voices are taken seriously, and that the Union continues to represent the full diversity of society.
Tell us some fun facts about yourself!
I am currently studying for a second degree as I approach 40, which says a lot about how much I believe in lifelong learning. Outside of study and work, I enjoy fitness and recently took part in HYROX, which has taught me a lot about discipline, resilience, and pushing through discomfort.
And finally – what do you love about the OU?
What I love about the OU is that it gives people another chance, a different route and a way to keep growing, no matter their age, background or circumstances. It opens doors for people who may not have followed a traditional path, and that really matters to me.
