What you'll do:

Receive research requests (Level 2 or above)

Find relevant online resources (articles, journals, documents)

Send resources you find for printing and postinng to the student

All you need is internet access – volunteer from anywhere!
Who we're looking for:

Current OU students at Level 2, 3 or above (you must have access to the library to carry out this role)

Welcoming all students to apply, though we are experiencing more requests in Law so this may be beneficial.

Please note that this role may involve supporting research requests in subjects outside of your own area of study or expertise. While we aim to match students with volunteers who have relevant subject experience, this will not always be possible. Volunteers may therefore be asked to explore unfamiliar topics and work collaboratively with fellow volunteers to support students’ research needs. A willingness to step outside your comfort zone, develop your research skills, and approach new subjects with curiosity and confidence is highly valued in this role.
Time commitment:
1–4 hours per week, flexible depending on demand.

Benefits to self
Despite there being no direct contact with prisoners, our volunteers feel a great sense of pride and achievement in supporting students who study in a secure environment.
Benefits to others
This is a very important role - since 2019, nearly 1000 requests have been fulfilled, and over 7000 individual resources sent to students in prisons.
Training available
All training is delivered online via MS Teams, all volunteers are supported to complete Core Volunteer Training which includes, GDPR, Safeguarding and Prevent. Role specific training is also provided.
