Deputy President: Andrew Wilson

Discover more about Andrew and his role.

Name:

Andrew Wilson

My role:

Deputy President

Information about my role:

As Deputy President for the Open University Students Association, I will be working closely with the President, assisting and deputising as and when needed, as well as chairing various meetings. I will also be engaging directly with our postgraduate research team – a crucial, integrated part of the University who can teach us many things related to their research.

My priorities for the 2024–26 term:

During my elected term, my priorities are:

  • To continue the strong relational engagement between our students and the University as a student union, ensuring that fair and impartial discussions are continually maintained.

  • To continually build the Student Leadership Team (SLT) through regular engagement and discussions.

What I’ve been up to and what I’m currently working on:

Prior to the start of my role, I have been working at an Amazon fulfilment centre as a Fulfilment Associate for nearly six years, doing a variety of tasks depending on the needs of the business.

Recognising the big change in leaving Amazon, I am excited to take on this role as I hope to continue to build upon the achievements which our outgoing 2022–24 SLT have achieved.

What I’m studying:

I’m currently studying BA Business Management (Accounting). Having previously completed a Professional Certificate in Accounting (PCA), I decided to return to The Open University to complete the degree pathway, and have successfully completed Stage 1 of the degree! Due to the PCA being related to the degree pathway, using the credit transfer, I have only one module from Stage 2 to complete before completing Stage 3 modules.

What I do when I’m not studying:

Currently, I try to spend some time with my family, watching films, reading stories, listening to the news, as well as music (I do like to play on the piano at times, and intend on learning the bass guitar) and travelling back and forth to my in-laws in Essex.

My top study tips:

Do not be afraid to reach out to your tutor if issues/questions arise. They are there to help in guiding you with your studies. For example, if you struggle to understand a specific subject with your module, then by asking for further guidance, the tutor could provide one-to-one assistance or will reply with suggestions how to interpret the content. As Benjamin Franklin said: “Fail to plan, plan to fail”.
