Join LRAC, the Arts and Humanities Society for this online lecture that will look at several domestic doorways in Pompeii that present images of deities to try and make suggestions about the significance of these images to those that dwelt within but also to passers-by. The other purpose of the talk is to demonstrate how colourful the building façades of Pompeii, how efforts were made to expresses individuality through doorways before the town’s destruction, and how much has been lost through exposure to the elements since excavation.
Doorways are an important aspect of a building façade. In Pompeii it is the doorway that is the first visual defining feature of the building behind. The decoration of doorways suggests varying amounts of information about the building’s past and current function for the occupants. In some cases, they are the only part of the building that has been excavated. Facades and doorways are the aspect of architecture that almost anyone has access to because they were on the street front. They were part of the historical, social, and cultural landscape of the building and streetscape. This talk will not only discuss individual doorways but will try to place within the context of the visual and living streetscape.
