Who are the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Students Group Committee?

 

Chair of the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Students Group

Tasks

The Chair leads the Committee in creating a strategy for the Group and will support the Committee to be effective in their roles to deliver this. Duties will include but are not limited to (depending on the agreed strategy of the Committee

  • Working closely with Vice-Chair to share managerial tasks.
  • Empowering Committee members by identifying support needs and communicating these to Association staff.
  • Empowering Committee members by identifying support needs and communicating these to Association staff.
  • Ensuring the Committee and members of the Group adhere to relevant OU and Association rules and regulations.
  • Maintaining a safe environment for the Committee and members to participate in discussions.
  • Representing the Group in an official capacity at the OU and the Students Association by making public announcements and attending or taking part in events.
  • Liaising with Association staff, the Student Leadership Team, the Race Equality.
  • Charter Project team, the OU’s BME staff network and other student-led Support Groups to collaboratively drive forward improvements related to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and to address intersectionalities among students.
  • Working with the Communications Officer to moderate the Group’s online platforms.

Training

  • Four online induction and training sessions run in MsTeams .
  • Mandatory e-learning modules and online self-study core training for volunteers.
  • Opportunities for optional personal development training.

Vice-Chair of the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Students Group

Tasks

The Vice-Chair, works closely with the Chair of the Committee and agrees on sharing certain tasks between themselves. Shared aims will be to lead on creating a strategy for the Group and to support the Committee to be effective in their roles to deliver this. Duties will include but are not limited to (depending on the agreed strategy of the Committee):

  • Deputising for the Chair (attend meetings, make decisions in their absence)
  • Working closely with the Chair to share managerial tasks
  • Coordinating and delegating tasks to other Committee members
  • Empowering Committee members by identifying support needs and communicating these to Association staff
  • Ensuring the Committee and members of the Group adhere to relevant OU and Association rules and regulations
  • Maintaining a safe environment for the Committee and members to participate in discussions
  • Producing a quarterly report on the work and impact of the Group to the Student Leadership team
  • Representing the Group in an official capacity at the OU and the Students Association by making public announcements and attending or taking part in events
  • Liaising with Association staff, the Student Leadership Team, the Race Equality Charter Project team, the OU’s BME staff network and other student-led Support Groups to collaboratively drive forward improvements related to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and to address intersecionalities among students
  • Working with the Communications Officer to moderate the Group’s online platforms

Secretary of the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Students Group

Tasks

The Secretary is responsible for providing administrative support to the Committee to deliver the agreed strategy of the Group. Duties will include but are not limited to (depending on the agreed strategy of the Committee):

  • Supporting the Committee with agreed administrative tasks
  • Coordinating and communicating Committee meetings
  • Taking and distributing Committee meeting minutes
  • Overseeing important dates and deadlines relevant to the Group, populating calendars
  • Supporting Chair in ensuring the Committee and members of the Group adhere to relevant OU and Association rules and regulations
  • Performing quality assurance tasks by creating tools to measure the impact of the Group
  • Liaising with Association staff, the Student Leadership Team and other student-led Support Groups to collaboratively drive forward improvements related to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and to address intersectionalities among students
  • Working with the Communications Officer to moderate the Group’s online platforms

Training

The Communications Officer works with the Committee in creating a strategy for the Group and will help to deliver this. Duties will include, but are not limited to (depending on the agreed strategy of the Committee):

  • Reviewing communications by gathering feedback from the Committee and Group members

Events Officer in the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Students Group

Tasks

The Events officer works with the Committee in creating a strategy for the Group and will help to deliver this. Duties will include, but are not limited to (depending on the agreed strategy of the Committee):

  • Developing ideas for events in partnership with the Group Committee
  • Planning and delivering events for the Group by taking on an Events and Meet up host role
  • Collaborating with the Secretary and Communications Officer on timelines for events
  • Working with the Communications Officer to ensure the Group membership is kept informed on events
  • Encouraging members to suggest ideas for events and to actively participate
  • Ensuring events are accessible
  • Maintaining a safe environment for members to participate in discussions
  • Regularly reviewing events by gathering feedback from the Committee and Group members
  • Liaising with Association staff, the Student Leadership Team and other student-led Support Groups to collaboratively drive forward improvements related to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and to address intersectionalities among students
  • Working with the Communications Officer to moderate the Group’s online platforms
