Charon Gates, our WELS Faculty Rep (Wellbeing, Education and Language Studies), has been given a WELS Student Award from The Open University. The award was given in recognition of Charon's work in her school of Education, Childhood, Youth and Sport (ECYS).

Charon was nominated for the award by Professor Jackie Musgrave and Dr Jon Rainford. The nomination read:

"Charon has worked tirelessly to complete her studies; she has recently graduated with a merit in her Masters in Education after eight years of being a student with us. Charon has had multiple challenges but has developed strategies that help her to address the challenges. It is impressive that Charon has achieved so much success in her own studies, but it is astonishing that she also has the time and generosity of spirit to give so much of her time and expertise to us.

"Charon has multiple roles, within the OU, WELS faculty and within our school. The breadth of experience that Charon has developed in her active participation as ECYS Student Voice and Wellbeing Ambassador, ECYS PDP (Personal Development Planning) Team Leader UG and PG (undergraduate and postgraduate) Education Programmes, Student Representative to the ECYS Board of Studies and Student Representative Careers and Employability Service REAG (Race Equality Action Group). Charon co-leads the ECYS Neurodiversity Cafes with Dr Jon Rainford.

"Charon's knowledge and enthusiasm are highly valued by me; she is one of my 'go to' students and always makes valuable contributions and suggestions. Her work helps us to improve the experience of all of our students. I am very grateful to her for all of the value she adds to our work in ECYS."

Additionally, Charon received a Commended Award with her Undergraduate PDP Team.

Congratulations to Charon for this achievement and for her vital work in this field!
