After 12 years of dedicated service, Martha Lane Fox will be stepping down from her role as the OU’s Chancellor at the end of December. Now, the OU have begun the search for the next Chancellor – and they want your suggestions.

This is your chance to shape the future of the OU: you're invited to nominate someone who'd make an outstanding Chancellor.

So what makes a great Chancellor?

They’re the honorary head of the University, and the OU’s most visible champion. It’s an unpaid role – taken for love of the OU mission and vision. One of their main responsibilities is to preside over graduation ceremonies, celebrating student achievements.

It’s someone who:

  • Believes in the OU mission and is a passionate advocate for accessible, high-quality education.
  • Is a respected public figure, held in high esteem and recognised across society.
  • Has diverse life experiences and can connect with our vibrant, varied student community.
  • Is available and committed – the Chancellor attends key University events and engages meaningfully.
  • Can serve for at least five years in the role.

Who can’t be nominated?

  • Current politicians or members of the royal family.
  • Anyone who is already a Chancellor at another university.
  • Current salaried OU staff members.

So who is your choice?

Please let us know who you want to nominate to represent the OU as Chancellor! Nominations close on Sunday, 10 August.
