Applications have now opened to become the next STEM Faculty representative, where you'll join a team of enthusiastic student leaders eager to create a positive impact.
What is being a faculty rep like, and what impact could you have if you apply? Hear all about the role from the current Faculty Representative for Arts and Social Sciences (FASS), Jack Flaherty:
I came into this role through co-option myself two years ago, before being elected for a full term. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve made.
Being a Faculty Rep means your voice is heard in committee meetings, academic discussions, and strategic conversations that directly impact students. You’ll work closely with staff, senior leadership, and fellow reps to advocate for change, share feedback, and help shape the future of your faculty.
Since stepping into the role, I’ve had the chance to:
- Sit in committee meetings where real decisions are made about teaching, learning, and student support.
- Raise concerns and ideas directly with senior staff, and see them taken seriously.
- Work alongside other reps and university leaders to improve the academic experience for everyone.
- Understand the academic environment and build professional skills.
One of the most rewarding parts has been seeing how student feedback can genuinely shape policy and practice. Whether it’s pushing for improved tutorials, clearer communication from the faculty, or more inclusive teaching, your voice as a Faculty Rep can make a difference.
You'll also be joining the Student Leadership Team of the Open SU, where we are working to drive positive change across the OU through our priority areas. Being a STEM Rep will allow you to develop leadership, communication, and advocacy skills. One thing I’ve learned is how important time management is. Some weeks are quite busy, especially when committee papers arrive and you need to read through them carefully to prepare. Other weeks are much quieter, giving you space to focus on coursework, your job, or personal life. Like many students, I juggle this role alongside my studies, full-time work, and personal life. It’s not always easy, but it’s absolutely doable.
If you’re in STEM and care about your course, your fellow students, and your faculty, I encourage you to apply. You don’t need to have all the answers, just a commitment to learning and representing others.
