The recent ruling by the Supreme Court on the legal definition of a woman will have undoubtedly been the source of extreme worry, anxiety and upset for many students. This does not just affect students who are transgender, in the process of transitioning, or going through challenges with their gender identity. Studying already presents its own difficulties, and we acknowledge that this ruling will add further stress and pressure to some people.
The Open University Students Association, and myself as VP EDI, want to remind all students that a wide range of support is available to them should they need it. The resources and support networks available are included below on this article. With this being a very recent ruling, it is not fully known how, or if, this will impact studying at The Open University, and I will be keeping up-to-date with this as announcements are made.
On a personal level, I would like to remind transgender students, but also all students across the OU, that this is a time for coming together and supporting each other. Keep a closer eye on your peers and be there to offer support.
