My name:
Rochelle Benjamin
My role:
Black, Asian & Minority Ethnic Student Representative
Information about my role:
As the new BAME Representative at The Open University, my role is to represent and support students from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic backgrounds. I aim to be a voice for our diverse communities, raise awareness of the challenges faced by BAME students, and work with the University to promote inclusion, equity, and meaningful change. I also help ensure BAME students feel heard, supported, and empowered throughout their academic journey.
My priorities for this role:
- Creating safe, inclusive spaces where BAME students can share their experiences and feel part of a community.
- Advocating for equity in the student experience, including tackling attainment gaps and promoting access to opportunities.
- Organising events that celebrate cultural diversity and encourage open conversations about race and identity.
- Working closely with staff and other student leaders to push for anti-racist policies and greater representation across the University.
What I’ve been up to and what I’m currently working on:
So far, I’ve been connecting with the University teams to learn more about current initiatives and explore how we can build on them. Right now, I’m working on plans for a BAME student forum, and exploring ideas for virtual events that focus on wellbeing, empowerment, and community building.
What I’m studying:
I’m currently studying Health & Social Care. I’m passionate about improving lives and supporting people from all backgrounds, especially those from under-represented or marginalised communities. This course is helping me deepen my understanding of health inequalities and the importance of culturally-competent care.
What I do when I’m not studying:
When I’m not studying, I enjoy travelling and exploring new places and cultures. I also enjoy reading, especially books that broaden my perspective or offer a bit of escapism after a busy day. Travelling and reading both help me relax, recharge, and stay inspired.
.
My top study tips:
- Plan ahead: Stay organised by keeping track of deadlines and breaking your workload into smaller, manageable tasks.
- Find what works for you: Whether it’s studying in short bursts or using colour-coded notes, personalise your study style.
- Use the support available: Don’t hesitate to reach out to tutors, forums, or fellow students – you’re not alone.
- Make time for breaks: Rest is essential for focus and mental health, so don’t feel guilty for stepping away when needed.
- Celebrate progress: Every small step forward counts – be proud of how far you’ve come!
