Image and copyright guidance
Images to use
When choosing images for the website (or
The Hoot
), please either create them yourself in Canva or choose an image from one of these four free image sites:
Pixabay
Pexels
Unsplash
Canva
You can also use an existing logo (but only if you have permission to use it). For example, we use the National Student Survey logo on our website, such as
this article
.
You can also use your own photos (if you have permission from other people in the photograph, if relevant).
Copyright info
The reason we have these image guidelines in place is so we won't fall foul of copyrights. Using images we don't have permission for (eg: taking an image from Google or a Wikipedia page) is a breach of copyright, and can lead to big fines.
We will begin an annual audit of images in 2025 (doing a spot-check) to check that our images are correct on the website.
Adding alt-text to images
Alt text should be used for
all images
. This text should be a snappy sentence which gets to the point. For example, the alt text for the image below is 'A line of yachts docked on the river side'.
For images within page content, click on the image box (as shown below). You will then see an 'Alternative text' box there.
For
child pages
, go into 'Metadata' and you will find the 'Image alt text' box there.
For
events
, the 'Alt text' box can be found on the 'Add event' page itself (
www.oustudents.com/admin/ents/event/
).
For
news articles
, the 'Alternate text' box will come up once you have uploaded an image onto the 'Add news article' page (
www.oustudents.com/organisation/admin/news/editarticle/6013/
).
Image sizes
The image sizes for the different parts of our website are as follows:
Images within pages / articles – up to a width of 900 pixels
Child page tiles – 1920 x 1280 pixels
News article uploads – 1000 x 1000 pixels
Event uploads and clubs / societies – square images (with any text put into the centre)
