Supporting your mental health during January Wellbeing Week

Today (19 January) is Blue Monday, commonly known as the ‘most depressing day of the year’ due to the bad weather, depleted motivation, and the financial and emotional slumps commonly felt after the high of the festive season.

Whilst the day was originally a media gimmick, thought to have been designed to sell holidays, it has become a way to raise awareness about mental health and to encourage people to start conversations about wellbeing.

Talking about your feelings can help you stay in good mental health and deal with times when you feel troubled. Don’t forget you can use the OU Wellbeing app and TalkCampus (an app where students can access 24/7 free, anonymous mental health support).

Another way to support your wellbeing and meet like-minded people, is by getting involved with one of our clubs and societies. Open SU currently has 30 clubs and 15 societies, covering everything from our Environmental Sustainability Society to our Cyber Security Club. Making new friends, trying something new and even a simple break from the usual routine are all ways to help beat the mid-Winter slump.

Sometimes a private conversation with an anonymous listening ear is what is needed to make you feel better. If you prefer to talk to someone privately, Mind UK provide mental health and wellbeing information and support, and The Samaritans are available 24 hours a day to support with any challenges you are encountering.

Equip yourself with mindfulness tools this January

Did you know that regular practice of mindfulness can help us deal with stress and better regulate our emotions in response to the trials and tribulations of day-to-day life? Research into the effects of mindfulness has shown it to be particularly beneficial in helping with stress, anxiety and depression.

Mat Schnencks, Senior Learning Designer in Learner and Discovery Services and mindfulness practitioner, provided this pre-recorded session, which is less than 20 minutes long and gives a great introduction into the practice of mindfulness – give it a go and let us know what you think!

Say no to 'Blue Monday' stereotypes, and take charge of your mental health during our first Wellbeing Week of 2026!
