Social, media issues - meta and x - do they represent our values

The university and the association both use Facebook and X (twitter) platforms, but recently these have become politically devalued and meta’s most recent moderation change is absolutely not a thing we can approve of, with the revelation that they have removed their content moderations teams and altered their moderation standards to the point that women are now able to be described as household objects, or LGBT+ persons as “mentally ill”, along with large sweeps towards the right that are deeply alarming. We as a student body and even a university need to decide if we want to continue to use meta and x, whether we are content to accept these platforms and not protest these changes or whether we are willing to stand up and say that these changes are not compatible with the values of the Open University, and pull back, whether that is a complete withdrawal from meta and x, to move our social elements off and leave our informational sources alone, and pull all of social materials into the ouceonnect/discord other form of communication (eg a large public facing moderated forum system with more user friendliness than the vle so we can use it as a public source to bring new students in/communicate with alumni etc) but these thoughts require us to actually stand up and consider, whether we stay or go, we need to have this conversation, both as an Ou and possibly across the higher education sector and in conjunction with NUS. For reference https://www.aa.com.tr/en/europe/over-60-german-universities-quit-social-media-platform-x/3447287# these things can be done, we need to decide what we are and what we stand for, and who we stand with. I hate to be reactionary, but with potentially decades of social growth going into regression, mentioning pastor Niemullers famous poem does not feel like it’s being overblown for once…

6:43pm on 14 Jan 25 This is really important. This policy change will make meta platforms basically intolerable for every single person who is at all marginalised and any ally of those groups - as has already happened for X. We have to consider whether we want, as an organisation acting for students, to actively support those platforms and force students to use them if they wish to engage with other students. I know it will be easy to dismiss the impact that this has - but quite frankly, even if I never post, I do not want to be fed a torrent of the worst bigotry every single time I login just to connect with OU students or stay up to date on things that are going on. Similarly, we do not want to split our community yet further, by forcing students who are impacted by the hate speech and bigotry to be mostly isolated on our own while much of the discussion continues to happen elsewhere. And if anyone thinks I am overstating the problem, I challenge you to simply look at the comments on any even remotely prominent or visible trans or disabled person's page on X who is speaking on trans and/or disability issues and see the absolute nightmare that is their replies.

12:53am on 15 Jan 25 While I do not condone the behaviour the new moderation policies of Meta and the not so new policies of X. It remains a fact that as a University without a brick and mortar space we have to be willing to meet students and union members where they are. Unfortunately, some members, for reasons that are allowed to remain their own will not be willing or able to move platforms. Thus, I believe removing our presence from those platforms would mean abandoning those members and leaving them in a vulnerable position. We need more OU affiliated safe spaces, that are able to meet members where we find them. This would also give people the ability to liaise with members and offer them better platforms, where they can expand their social and academic circles.

5:02am on 15 Jan 25 As a bipolar lgbt person, literally currently in hospital all i can say is: wholeheartedly agree. It's making every social media company dangerous for anyone between the age of 16 - 18. For further reference: i am 34

9:47am on 15 Jan 25 This is not a debate—it is a moral imperative. The continued use of Meta and X (formerly Twitter) by the Open University (OU) and the Students Association represents a direct betrayal of marginalized students and an unacceptable endorsement of platforms that actively enable harm. The changes to Meta’s moderation policies, allowing LGBT+ individuals to be described as “mentally ill” and women to be dehumanized, are grotesque. X’s rampant hate speech and rollback of protections for trans and disabled people only solidify its place as a platform of unchecked bigotry. These platforms have declared open season on the marginalized, and by staying, we are complicit. This is not about “meeting students where they are.” It is about choosing to stand with the most vulnerable in our community or abandoning them to toxic environments. No student should be forced to navigate platforms where their very existence is under attack just to engage with their university. Forcing students to participate in these spaces makes the OU a collaborator in their harm. This is intolerable. We must sever all ties with Meta and X immediately—not in phases, not after endless deliberation, but now. Every moment we stay sends the message that the OU is willing to sacrifice its principles for convenience. This cannot be allowed to stand. Alternatives like OUConnect, Discord, or even a new, OU-moderated platform must be prioritized and implemented without delay. If over 60 German universities can leave X, there is no excuse for us to remain. Our responsibility is not only to our current students but also to the future of education. The OU was founded on principles of accessibility and inclusivity, and continuing to engage with platforms that undermine those principles tarnishes our legacy. By acting decisively, we can set a precedent for other institutions to follow, leading a movement that rejects complicity and demands accountability from corporations profiting off hate. Under the Equality Act 2010, the OU is obligated to ensure that no student faces discrimination, harassment, or exclusion. By remaining on these platforms, we are failing to meet this duty and risking further harm to our students. We must also consider the Public Order Act 1986, which prohibits the incitement of hatred. Are we truly comfortable maintaining ties with platforms that so blatantly disregard these principles? This is a call to action. Not to deliberate or delay but to act decisively. Remove the OU and Students Association from Meta and X. Do it now, without equivocation. Anything less is complicity. Our students deserve better. The marginalized deserve better. The future of inclusive education demands better. Stand up, act, and refuse to let hate win.

3:46pm on 15 Jan 25 I agree we will almost certainly end up leaving rump parts behind, but we are starting to develop new social media channels, we can do things like move from twitter to Bluesky, the question isn’t are we going whole scale, (or perhaps we are) the po int is that such large organisations as the OU have power to show they disapprove in a way we as individuals don’t… this is why it is so important for this to get raised and discussed. plus I kinda like the idea of a phpBB or bulletin powered OU dedicated space run on our servers, with our rules and our branding as a major statement….may not happen but again, things to consider

4:55pm on 15 Jan 25 I don't believe Bluesky meets the needs of the OU, as students come from across the political spectrum, and Bluesky aims predominantly at those on the left side of the political spectrum. Further, Bluesky has privacy issues that are not present on the platforms from Meta or X, such as visible block lists, which are a feature of the protocol used by Bluesky. The open data policy leaves users vulnerable to having their data used to train AI without their express consent. Again, this is a feature of the protocol used by Bluesky. These privacy risks should be enough to deter those with concerns about digital privacy, especially if they are members of a marginalised community. Currently, there isn't a platform available that can fulfil the role previously covered by Meta and X, but that does not mean we should continue using those platforms/companies.

2:42pm on 3 Feb 25 Remember the emphasis of 'our values', inclusivity is key here and to be frank it's best to remember that neither you or your personal political beliefs represents all the students here. What is ideal endgame with this proposal? my guess would be that you only want to attract people from one end of the political spectrum to join the university, if this is correct, I'm sorry to inform you this is not how life works, and the university is open to everyone regardless of political beliefs. I simply cannot fathom how in this day and age people both advocate for inclusivity and in the same breath suggest excluding certain people and of course have the nerve to say it is because it does not represent 'our values'...well newsflash our values are bigger than just you I'm afraid.
